A couple of work-arounds; waiting about 10 seconds after signing into Vista then manually starting AVG works. Also, using Sleep or Hibernate mode also works as it seems only a full system reboot causes this. Of course in the mean time, as others have suggested, OneCare and Avast are good alternatives.
